PZL SW-4 Puszczyk
The PZL SW-4 as we know it now has a development period that stretches a couple of decades, from the 1960s until the 1990s. Ultimately, the result was a single engined helicopter with a turboshaft engine on top of the fuselage, powering a three blade main rotor and a two blade tail rotor on the right of the short tail boom. The tail boom starts wide at the rear fuselage and quickly tapers. At the end are swept vertical fins up and down, with slightly in front of the tail rotor horizontal stabilisers with end plates, which are also swept, differently above and below the horizontal fins. The fuselage of the Puszczyk looks a bit like that of the AS350 Écureuil, with a similar window pattern. The rather wide frame in the cockpit front windows is different though, and thus typical. The rear fuselage slowly tapers towards the tail boom.
For a moment, the SW-4 was marketed by Leonardo as the AW009, but the bottom of the production line has since been taken over by the Kopter SK09.
If the front of the PZL SW-4 looks familiar, you may be right. Indeed it has a shape and window pattern similar to that of the AS350. Note however the quite wide frame in the middle of the two cockpit front windows.
The rear fuselage of the SW-4 slowly tapers towards the tail boom, after which the latter quickly tapers. Both the vertical fins and end plates are swept.
Confusion possible with
Aérospatiale AS350/ Airbus H125
Especially the nose and window pattern of the AS350 are similar to that of the PZL SW-4, but also other appearance elements are alike. The tail boom of the AS350 is longer and narrower. Additionally, the horizontal stabilisers have no end plates. Other differences are more subtle
Changhe Z-11
As the Z-11 looks a lot like the AS350, it is also similar to the SW-4. The main difference is that the Z-11 has a slightly longer, thus distinct nose. Also, it lacks lower windows in the front cabin doors.
Leonardo AW119
The way the fuselage and tail boom taper on the AW119 is quite like it happens on the SW-4, so a possible source of confusion. The main difference is that the tail boom ends pointed and the horizontal stabilisers have no end plates. Additionally, the AW119 is larger, has a four blade main rotor and a tail rotor on the left side.
